Symphonic Winds is our audition-based, premier performing ensemble here at JICHS. In 2019, and for the first year of its existence, this ensemble received a "Superior with Distinction" rating at the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment, performing Grade V literature. This group is classified as a true Wind Ensemble, or a smaller concert band with 1 performer per part.
Jazz Band is a fairly new ensemble at JICHS. This year, Jazz Band meets during the school day. Students enrolled in Jazz Band learn to play in a variety of jazz styles and how to improvise on the spot, all while preparing for concerts and gigs throughout the community. This year, we plan to perform at the South Carolina Jazz Performance Assessment for the very first time!
We are fortunate to have a specialized class during the school day for the rising percussionist. Some of these students are also members of our Symphonic Winds and Concert Band. Performing on multiple concerts throughout the year, our Percussion Ensemble is always a audience favorite. In class, students learn technical skills on a variety of percussion instruments, studying genres and styles from all over the world.
The Concert Band is the core unit of our band program, serving as our larger performing ensemble. It is in this setting that students learn the fundamental and technical skills required to be a fine musician. This ensemble presents a minimum of four concerts each year. In 2018 & 2019, the Concert Band earned a "Superior with Distinction" rating at the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment, performing Grade IV literature.
"PRIDE OF THE ISLAND" Pep BAND
The pep band at JICHS is what our community is most familiar with. While serving an integral role in the the spirit of our community, the "Pride of the Island" can be seen and heard in various parades, community events, and under the Friday night lights. Go Trojans!!
